The world in which we live is quickly being drained of all its Romance. We watch films like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, or Braveheart, or Gladiator, and our heart soars. We long to rise up and be the hero. Somehow, deep within ourselves, we know that we were created to "save the day". After all, we are made in the image of God, "a stem of that victorious stock" (Henry V). In Jesus, God came down among us and showed us how He would live as a human: fighting for the freedom of captive human souls right down to the buying of that freedom with His own blood.
We all long to play the Hero.
But what are we to do about that longing? Where are we to go to get "trained"? Who will encourage us in this endeavor?
We believe that it is time for the Church to offer an avenue for many of these longings to a young generation that is disillusioned with the modern era. And yes, something other than what is currently being classified as "post-modernism". Something pre-modern. Something a thousand years older than the automobile, the cell-phone, the television, and the emasculating life of earning unnecessary amounts of money by slaving away at a desk in some small office beneath the glare of pale flourescent lighting.
We believe that a young man or woman who wishes to become a "modern day knight" ought to be given permission and opportunity to do just that. Yes, it will look a little different than it did back then. Modern-day knights may not ride around town on horseback, or wear heavy armour and carry long javelins. But they will be bound by oaths of fellowship to serve the weak and the oppressed. And they ought to know how to ride a horse and wield a sword -- if only for the Romance of it.
It is not our desire to set The Warrior's Path ministry up as the only resource for pursuing the life of a modern-day knight. Perhaps others will take up the call better than we can ourselves - and we thank God for every new outpost of light and Life that may arise from the ashes of a disillusioned and bored generation of would-be world-changers who have lost their way.
